Easy Ways to Help Your Child Develop Their Problem-Solving Skills

Helping your child develop their problem-solving skills problem-solving skills is important for developing critical thinking skills. Problem-solving skills also provide children with a foundation for decision making, logical reasoning, categorizing, negotiation, and creativity.

Tips for supporting your child’s problem-solving skills:

  • Use everyday moments
  • Ask open-ended questions
  • Read books and tell stories
  • Model problem-solving

 

Here are some activities you can enjoy at home with your child to support the development of their problem-solving skills:

Infants
Play disappearing and reappearing games. You can play peek-a-boo or use a blanket to hide an object and make it reappear.

Toddlers
Play memory games using memory card games with matching pictures on them.

Preschoolers
Making patterns with objects such as blocks, shapes, beads/string to create patterns.

School-agers
Go on a treasure hunt. You can create this in/around your own home or use the area you live in. Hung for one item or several items by following clues.
