Supporting Your Child’s Developing Problem-Solving Skills

Developing problem solving skills helps children make good choices. Effective problem-solving skills result in children who are happier, more confident, and more independent.

By the time a child is 3 years old, they enjoy experimenting with materials of all kinds. Using lots of items develops their problem-solving through trial and error. Four-year-olds mostly enjoy solving problems with their friends and working together.

Try these activities to support your child’s problem-solving development:

Infants: Peek-a-boo and hiding objects by making them disappear and reappear.

Toddlers:  Puzzles and building with blocks.

Preschool:  Memory games, sorting, story time questions, and creating patterns with different materials.
