Each month for six months a therapy dog and its owner visit participating childcare programs and read to preschool-aged children. The Therapy Dogs program combines literacy activities and hands-on demonstrations to help teach young children about animal safety.
Books focus on how to safely interact with dogs and what to do if they encounter a strange dog. Children also learn the difference between therapy dogs and service dogs. Centers will get to keep the books to provide opportunities for children to revisit their experience.
