This initiative is a healthy lifestyle campaign designed to help Volusia County families and children by teaching them to follow four basic guidelines:
Eat 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables every day
Limit recreational screen time to 2 hours or less
Be active for 1 hour or more each day
Drink 0 sugar-sweetened drinks
How It Works:
We’ve teamed up with Let’s Go!, a nationally recognized program that helps create healthier environments in schools, child cares and out-of-school programs, healthcare practices, workplaces, and communities – places where children and their families live, learn, work, and play.
Our Quality Initiative staff meet with local centers to share resources such as classroom materials and books to help reinforce the 5-2-1-0 initiative. Each center then decides how they want to model the 5-2-1-0 guidelines and chooses to either grow a garden together as a class or have a self-watering garden container to grow fruits and vegetables.
As part of this initiative, parents receive a monthly letter on healthy life choices associated with 5-2-1-0 and how they can continue healthy eating habits at home.
