Grade-Level Reading

The Florida Grade-Level Reading (GLR) Campaign is working with communities and organizations statewide to boost early childhood literacy. An alarming number of children – about 67 percent nationwide and more than 80 percent of those from low-income families – are not proficient readers by the end of third grade.  The Campaign works within three solution areas proven to move the needle on third grade reading proficiency: school readiness, attendance, and summer learning.

Based on 2019 – 2020 data, 42% of children in Volusia County were not ready to learn upon entry to Kindergarten. The Florida Chamber of Commerce data shows that in the 32114-zip code 53% of children live in poverty and 38% are not reading at grade level.
