Easy Ways (and a yummy snack!) to Help Your Child Develop Their Fine Motor Skills

Fine motor skills include the movement and use of the hands and fingers, as well as hand-eye coordination. Developing fine motor skills is important for everyday tasks such as reaching, grasping, and picking up objects. Developing these skills also helps children feed themselves and learn how to write.

Try these activities at home to support your child’s development of fine motor skills:

Infants: Reach, grab, and put objects in their mouth or bang two objects together.

Toddlers: Rolling playdough, kinetic sand, or similar material

Preschoolers: Trace circles or other shapes onto a piece of paper

School-Agers: Use finger puppets to tell a story

For a fun holiday fine motor activity, with marshmallows and pretzel sticks, build snowflakes.
